Legendary coach John Wooden grew up in rural Indiana—living a life of discipline, hard work, old-fashioned values, and basketball.
He was a high school standout, a 3-time All American at Purdue, and in 1932 he was asked to join the Boston Celtics. Wooden turned the Celtics down.
Instead, he became one of modern history’s greatest teachers and life philosophers.
In 1948, Wooden became the coach of the UCLA Bruins—one of the weakest teams in the Pacific Conference. Setting records that still stand today, his UCLA teams went on an 88 game winning streak, securing 10 NCAA Championships in just 12 years, 7 of them in a row, and amassing 885 victories with just 203 losses. No coach had ever been so successful.
John Wooden was the very first person inducted into the basketball Hall of Fame twice—once as a player and again as a coach.
ESPN named him “Coach of the 20th Century.” President George W. Bush awarded John Wooden the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
But Coach Wooden didn’t count awards, medals, and championships. For him, success was not about winning.
Success was the peace of mind found when you know you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.
They called him “Coach,” but for Wooden and the men and women who knew him best, he was really a teacher, a life philosopher, and a visionary thought leader for his time and ours.
He taught new rules for success to his players and anyone who would listen.
He invited anyone who needed a mentor into his home, to his den, where he tutored many of today’s top athletes and achievers.
